12 Questions from Jay Quinlan at Jays-XXX-Links.com

1. Can you give our readers a little background about yourself? What did you do before you got in this business?

Jay: I’m 33. I am from Uncasville, Connecticut. I lived in Atlanta for 14 years and live out in LA now. I played in a metal band called Dick Delicious and the Tasty Testicles and toured all over the place through most of the 1990’s, I worked random jobs, and sold drugs till I got into the whole online thing sometime in 1997.

2. When did Jays-XXX-Links first "open it's doors" on the Internet?

Jay: From 1997 till 2002 I worked with CECash / Online Media. I went off in 2002 to do my own thing. I still have a great relationship with CECash – they are great guys. Jays-XXX-Links.com opened in Nov 2002.

3. Can you tell us about your website – what it is and what it offers?

Jay: I know that I have done a lot with Jays XXX Links that is ahead of it’s time in many ways – I call it a “linklist on steroids” now there is fully categorized niche gays listings, a TGP with nothing but hosted galleries, tons of “in house” video content, editorials, adult news, and a paysite directory among other things. I am seeing quite a few copycats out there, but my goal from the beginning was to be so far ahead of the pack once people realized what I was doing that nobody could keep up.

4. What are some of the ways the industry has changed since you were a newbie?

Jay: The business is in a state of flux. I can remember the early days of pay-per-click sponsors, major search engines colossuses like Excite that are now extinct, and big-time sponsors which are now irrelevant.

5. What types of sites did you enjoy building the most?

Jay: None, LOL. I’ve built so many sites over the years that I can’t even put myself in the gallery / site building frame of mind anymore. I have one fulltime employee, two part-time employees, and I work on my network every day. I don’t do much building anymore. I mostly handle deals and business decisions.

6. What do you think the next "hot niche" will be that dominates the adult internet industry?

Jay: The whole “reality” thing seems to be running things now. I’m not sure how much steam is left in it, but it seems to be dominating at the moment.

7. On the other hand - what area do you feel needs the most work in this industry?

Jay: Webmasters need to be more aware of the government’s agenda against online porn. This 2257 stuff is some serious shit and a lot of people are sleeping on it. In my opinion, if you support George Bush’s conservative agenda and want to remain outside of the confines Club Fed you are an idiot. There is no such thing as a conservative pornographer.

8. What would you say is your favorite part about working in this business?

Jay: The money is #1 – at the rate I am going I will be a millionaire by 2005. The shows can be fun too. I’ve also made some good friends in the biz. Also, you can’t beat making your own schedule and not having to kiss someone’s ass to get time off is awesome. There are a lot of good points about this business.

9. If you were to offer advice to a new webmaster, just getting started in this industry today - what would you tell her or him?

Jay: It takes a long time to make enough to live on doing this and there is a lot you need to learn. Intelligence and creativity are required to succeed. Have a plan B. Prepare yourself for some very long days in front of the computer.

10. What is the most important thing you've learned over the years in this industry?

Jay: Backup your work. Don’t count on your host. Have them back it up, you back it up, and then back it up again. I lost literally four years of work in one fell swoop because of this a few years ago.

11. What is your number one secret for success?

Jay: Prepare yourself for 16 hour days a day of work, work weekends, and work, work, and work some more. Then, as the years go on, you can start enjoying the money you’ve made and start curtailing some of your time online.

12. Any new projects in the near future you would like to share with our readers?

Jay: I am now running www.occash.com – that is going to be the last new project that I will be taking on for a while. We have a ton of new sites coming out. Running a program is a ton of work and expense. I wish that every newbie webmaster could run one for a while so the could appreciate the dynamics of it. Maybe they wouldn’t get so loose lipped on the boards if they knew.
