12 Questions from Lloyd
Brown (AKA) Baddog

1. How long have you been in the adult industry?

Baddog: The end of 1996 I discovered an adult website service bureau. I was looking for a way to use the Internet to make some money, so the timing was perfect. It was essentially one of the first, if not the first freehosts targeting adult webmasters. It was a one-man operation and the owner was obviously overwhelmed with affiliate support requests. It was not long before I approached the owner with an offer to help, primarily so I could get my support requests taken care of. After a few minutes on the telephone I was given a percentage of the company in exchange for my handling the support side of the company.  Eventually, this company grew to become the Mogul Networks, and I remained there as Adult Entertainment Manager, until I left in March 2003.

In April 2003 I was made an offer I could not refuse when SPP Productions, Inc. approached me with an offer to make me CEO with a majority share of the company. Our masthead site is Sex Pictures Pass AVS.

Since then I have also launched an ad brokerage, Pimps Promo and Content Shopper, which is a searchable database of content providers. I am also Director of Business Development for AdultSEM provides search engine marketing services to adult sites and provides a place where adult webmasters could find tutorials, an SEO blog, articles and more on the SE industry.

My most recent ventures include Got Web Host which provides SEO friendly web hosting and PRadult which the first adult press release service geared towards targeting the general public as opposed to adult industry related news sites.

2. Can you give our readers a little background about yourself. What did you do before you got in this business?

Baddog: When I was 18 I started working for GTE and worked there for almost 25 years. They gave me extensive training in logic and troubleshooting. I also became very involved with our union, which gave me a lot of hands on experience with writing, public speaking and the art of negotiation. This made me a noticed figure, and one of my co-workers had recently passed the bar to be a licensed attorney. He told me that when he opened his own practice that he wanted me to come work for him. It was not long before I said good-bye to GTE and found myself wearing a suit, and working in a Beverly Hills law office as a professional settlement negotiator. This was my true calling, and I think is what I do best, negotiate deals that work out to the benefit of everyone involved.

3. How did your previous job/profession help you in what you do today?

Baddog: I have used these skills to make every program I have found myself involved with over the last several years a success. I feel that if you can work out an arrangement that benefits not just yourself, but the other guy as well, only good things will result.

4. What is your daily routine - of and with the maintenance of your website?

Baddog:
I would have to say that there is not very much that is routine about my day. My primary purpose is providing goods and services to adult webmasters, so this means I spend a lot of time handling customer service issues. The response to Got Web Host has been pretty overwhelming, so I have had to learn some technical stuff that I always relied on others to do for me. So now my day includes setting up nameservers and building virtual accounts for clients. The balance of my day is spent reviewing and approving sites submitted to our various search engine directories, reviewing sites submitted to Sex Pictures Pass, optimizing press releases submitted to PRadult, and monitoring the boards for opportunities to promote our services.

5. What is the most important thing you have learned over the years in this industry?

Baddog: That is a pretty tough question in that most of the lessons I learned were well before I started working online. If anything, I would have to say that my experience here has only served to confirm what I learned early on. That is, that there is no more valuable tool than the ability to network, and there is no greater asset than your integrity.

6. Can you tell us about your website – what it is and what it offers?

Baddog: Since I have my fingers in so many pies, I will start with the most recent, and work my way back.

7. What is your favorite part about working in this business?

Baddog: I don't know that I can limit it to just one thing. I think it is a combination of things, with the people I work with topping the list. Working for myself, the monetary rewards, and the new challenges I find myself presented with all contribute to making me one happy camper.

8. What is your least favorite part about working in this business?

Baddog: While the people I deal with tops the list of my favorite part of working on this business, there are also people that make this a real drag. Fortunately, I am able to distance myself from these personas for the most part.

9. If you were starting all over today, would you do anything differently? And if so what would that be?

Baddog: I think my early experiences helped show me what not to do, and helped me come up with ideas that were beneficial to the common webmaster and affiliate.  The only thing I would definitely do differently would be to get into the providing of goods and services for webmasters a little sooner. I often use the analogy of the 1849 California Gold Rush.  There were tens of thousands of people rushing to California, seeking their fortune in the hills and rivers, hoping for that big strike, or the Mother Lode. Few ever saw their dream come true.  The ones that made the real money were the entrepreneurs that sold goods and services to the miners. Wells Fargo and Levi-Strauss are two examples of this. I like to think that eventually I will reach Well Fargo status, and if I had started a little earlier, perhaps this goal would be reached already.

10. What piece of advice would you give yourself if you were just starting out in this industry?

Baddog: Think outside the box, and be prepared to put in some long hours. Contrary to popular opinion, there is money in SEO, so use all the tools available to you. This includes blogs, directories and press releases. If you can get an interview done on you, jump on it. Search engines love legitimate text, and you can never have too much of it.

11. What are three things would you like to see changed (be it positive or negative) in this industry, tomorrow, a week from now, or a year down the road?

Baddog: I have given this quite a bit of thought, and I don't know that I can come up with three things I would like to see changed. I know that I would like to see a decision on 2257 reached, and that it be modified in a manner that would make compliance attainable without forcing the closure of so many companies. I would also like to see the move to implement the .XXX tld defeated. There is nothing positive about this tld, and I only foresee it causing trouble, and providing very little in the way of problem solving.

12. Any new projects in the near future you would like to share with our readers?

Baddog: My primary business partner, goodgirl, and I are in the process of building up a network of search engine directories. The ones that we have made know to the general public include Okay Sites, baddog Sites, goodgirl Sites, Directory Worthy and Hot Blog Sites. These are great link building tools, which are an essential part of SEO. We are currently allowing free submissions with no recip required. I make occassional announcements when we open a new one. I would suggest getting your free links while you can.
