1. How long have you
been in the adult industry?
Emerald: I started in the business in early 1997 with my
boyfriend (Meatman), he was the founder of Netpond.com (then Condom
Project) and I assisted him in the background mostly on that and
that's also where I learned the adult webmaster/webmistress
business.
2. Can you give our
readers a little background about yourself. What did you do before
you got in this business?
Emerald: Just prior to entering the online world, I wore
2 hats, I was working in the direct mail order market and I also
owned and operated a few video rental stores in the Caribbean, then
I met Meatman online, we soon discovered there was a lot more money
to be made in internet porn than video rentals and direct Marketing
thru the mail and we went full time internet soon after. We started
by developing some feeder sites using specific niche keywords for
Search Engines. Meatman went onto building Netpond up and I branched
off by building a network of free sites that fed into my new project
at the time - Smutgremlins.com which still is my baby to this day.
3. How did your previous
job/profession help you in what you do today?
Emerald: Learning your target audience by trying
different campaigns like they do in mail order and I applied that
theory also when building up the Video Stores - Knowing what the
customer is looking for and providing it is the key. I learned
everything from watching other webmasters, reading the adult
industry web boards, and asking questions.
4. What is your daily
routine - of and with the maintenance of your website?
Emerald: Usually the first thing I do is open my email -
few months ago I had over 1k emails per day - 98% of that being
spam, but I have started to use a spam filter program and that only
takes me about 10 minutes now. I'm a bit of a procrastinator so I
don't always reply to emails right away, but sooner or later I get
to them. Then of course like most of us I run thru my stats to see
how much I have made the previous day. I don't do heaps of
maintenance on Smut Gremlins because I have a full time reviewer who
does the grunt work of site reviews. I will peruse some adult boards
to see if anything interesting is going on. Sometimes I feel like
building some free sites, other times I feel like doing nothing and
I commence to play online games. (For 4 years I basically did
nothing on Smut Gremlins - the site was updated daily by my reviewer
while I was being a "Lady of Leisure", but I have come back full
time since March to work on Smut Gremlins and other projects)
5. What is the most
important thing you have learned over the years in this industry?
Emerald: Don't lend money to people, they never pay it
back and also be careful of people claiming to be your friend, very
cynical but I've seen some nasty stuff since I started. Outside of
that the major positive thing would be to BUILD, BUILD and BUILD
more and don't give the surfer to much good stuff, leave that for
the pay sites.
6. Can you tell us about
your website – what it is and what it offers?
Emerald: Smut Gremlins is your basic run of the mill
adult link site to free, pay and AVS links - when I first began Smut
Gremlins I didn't want any banners on it - even now I have very few
banners showing (other than the index page), but as the days go on I
find myself adding more and more sponsor links and advertising -
There is just so many sponsors to choose from now - when I started
the choices were not as abundant. The one thing I am most proud of
is 80% of my traffic is Search Engine hits - I attribute this mostly
to it being online since 1998, since I know very little about
gaining ranks in the SE's.
7. What is your favorite
part about working in this business?
Emerald: The money:) being able to earn a good income and
still go to work in your panties and bra is just amazing and I'm
glad I have been able to stay in business this long, I have also met
some wonderful people online and at shows.
8. What are three things
would you like to see changed (be it positive or negative) in this
industry, tomorrow, a week from now, or a year down the road?
Emerald: The major thing would be to get rid of the
scammers and people who are just out to make a fast buck and fuck
the consequences, they have been the major problem in this industry
since day one and they continue to be the driving force behind all
this industries problems.
9. If you were starting
all over today, would you do anything differently? And if so what
would that be?
Emerald: Not really I'm happy with what I have achieved
personally and also the things I helped Meatman achieve, we were a
team for along time and we both learned many things over time, Meat
probably has things he would do differently but I'm a happy camper.
10. What would you say
are the biggest obstacle(s) facing in the adult industry today?
Emerald: There is only one obstacle and I addressed that
in question 8 :))
11. Any new projects in
the near future you would like to share with our readers?
Emerald: Only thing I have going on is attempting to gain
more traffic to Smut Gremlins by building free sites to act as
feeder sites.
12. What is your number
one secret for success?
Emerald: Network, work hard and be yourself.
