12 Questions for
Dan
Of Wild Unicorns
1. Can you give our readers a little background about yourself. What
did you do before you got in this business?
Dan:
I am 23 and started my first really lame porn site about 3 years ago
and things have kinda developed into what I have now. When I got my
first PC, I didn’t even know how to turn the thing on. I took an
interest in porn (as ya do! :0) and I turned an interest into a
hobby, then a hobby into a business. Now I have 3 link sites,
hundreds of free and avs sites, my own free host, banner exchange and
3 tgps.
2. When did Wild Unicorns first "open it's doors" on the Internet;
And how did you come up with the name?
Dan: Wild Unicorns was again one of those weird little moments of madness
about 2 and half years ago when I sat in front of my PC and just put
up a load of links to the crappy porn sites that I used to visit. I
had a serious interest in making loads of avs sites and that’s where
the bulk of cash used to come from. I loved the avs sites far more
than any other sponsors but had nothing driving any serious traffic
to them. I realized I could get hits to the sites if I turned it
into a ‘public’ submitters link site… From that the baby was born!
3. Can you tell us about your website – what it is and what it
offers?
Dan: Wild Unicorns has over 10,000 active links updated almost daily to
most niche’s of adult action that surfers seem to look for. It also
has an extensive webmaster resource with an absolutely massive
submission list that seems to be used regularly.
Smiley’s Links was the newer of the 2 big link sites that I own but
has grown rapidly and most of the tricks that I learnt from Wild
Unicorns has been implemented into making smiley’s a success.
Gay Mans XXX Links is the ‘all singing all dancing’ all gay link
site in my collection offering plenty of links to Free, Avs and Pay
site porn.
4. What are some of the ways the industry has changed since you were
a newbie?
Dan: Visa have been total asses! Acacia are ripping everyone's asses off
for something they ‘supposedly’ own. ARS going mental with all their
sites and then putting them back together with very little warning….
Crazy World! In all seriousness
though.. It seems like webmasters are realizing there is more money
to be made when we all help each other. That didn’t really happen
when I was starting out. There were only a few people that would
even give me the time of day, people like Cristia (Bad Boy Billy’s
Boulevard), Dan (The Horny Guy), and Darren (Sexy Search). It’s to
these guys I owe a lot. They taught me that even though in theory
you work alone there are plenty of people out and about there to
help you out when you need it.
5. What types of sites
did you enjoy building the most?
Dan: Did? I wished I got the opportunity to stop! Hehe
I used to like making Tranny sites as they kinda make me smile. It’s
not like being gay or straight and liking something clear and excuse
the term ‘cut’, they are just errr…. Different …At least that’s the
diplomatic way of putting it I think.
6. What do you think the next "hot
niche" will be that dominates the adult internet industry?
Dan: How many more ways can we have sex! I think we’ve got most of them
up already haven’t we?
7. On the other hand - what area do you feel needs the most work in
this industry?
Dan: My sites!
8. What would you say is your
favorite part about working in this
business?
Dan: Hours that I choose, working with the great people that work for me
and do the jobs I hate :0)
Actually seeing the guys that I have taught work well, and make a
success of their own sites. That’s a buzz! Corny but true.
9. If you were to offer advice to a new webmaster, just getting
started in this industry today - what would you tell her or him?
Dan: Don’t try and take on too many tasks at the same time or you become
bombarded with crap. Listen to people that are trying to help you.
Everyone has a patience threshold, enthusiasm is a good thing but to
an established webmaster that is trying to get on, it can often be
very annoying at times. You need to respect that other people are
‘helping you’ NOT doing it for you. That is the only way you will
learn and learn fast, trial and error. We have all been there and
it’s a hard climb.
10. What is the most important thing you've learned over the years
in this industry?
Dan: That I need my bed as much as I like making $$. I love the fact that
I can make a lot of money doing something I enjoy, it takes up a lot
of time. Remembering there are people around us still; family,
friends, partners… they count far more than any amount of money.
Remembering that money can be replaced but the time you lose with
your loved ones can’t be.
11. What is your number one secret for success?
Dan: Good Friendships with other webmasters count for a lot.
12. Any new projects in the near future you would like to share with
our readers?
Dan: At the moment I am trying to build up a few more free sites to add
to the already bulging collection. Once that is sorted then I’ll be
looking at getting the content pages of my new pay site uploaded and
the program to go with it. Then… Then… the list is never ending!
