12 Questions from Apryl from XXX Design
1. Can you give our
readers a little background about yourself. What did you do before
you got in this business?
Apryl: I worked in a mainstream
marketing company. I maintained a commercial software that was
designed and used to submit site/s to search engines. I was
responsible for daily updates and learning about search engines
inside and out. I learned a lot about the
search engines, and different marketing techniques.
2. How did your previous job/profession help you in what you do
today?
Apryl: It got me started in the adult
industry. I would listen all day to our secretary turn away adult
business. I kept thinking there is a area of the web that has not
been touched and that needs marketing. That is when I opened my
adult marketing business back in 1995. I did adult marketing for
several years, until I realized I enjoyed building site/s as much if
not more then I did helping to gather traffic for clients.
3. Why don't you tell us what kind of computer you use and what
software programs you depend on for graphics and html?
Apryl: I have an outdated Gateway P4
computer. I use various media programs to create my graphics. I
mainly use Fireworks, Photoimpact and Photoshop when needed. I do
coding by hand and I also use Dreamweaver as well. I will sometimes
use all 3 graphic programs to design a combined effect. Its all in
what I'm looking and feeling for in a design.
4. What is your graphic experience/background?
Apryl: *smiles* Honestly I never had
much. I picked up the software and fiddled around while I marketed
sites for my clients. I finally got good enough I thought I might
make other website/s for other people. Once I started I loved it so
much I began building and building and building. I have and had a
lot of help from friends that are designers in the industry that
didn't mind giving me clues, pointers and help in learning to design
special pages.
5. What types of businesses and or Individuals need your services?
Apryl: I'd like to think everyone can
use my services, one way or another. We offer many services besides
design at XXX Design. You can contact me for advice, and questions.
If we don't have the answers we will either find out the answer or
direct you to someone that does.
6. How does your creative process work?
Apryl: Well it depends on what I am
working on. A lot of the time, once I view the content I get an idea
and then go with it...I also like building new and different things.
I try to not always go with the flow, but go against it, I think
sometimes that surfers really enjoy seeing new and different types
of designs when they surf web sites.
7. What types of sites did you enjoy building the most?
Apryl: I enjoy each and every site or
gallery page I create. Its the open canvas that can excite you and
bring all sorts of images and ideas to your mind. Then when you
start designing those images you get excited and it just goes from
there....
8. What are the most common web site mistakes that you see on the
web today?
Apryl: *smiles* Spelling errors and or
grammatical errors. I love to look at other designs. There are so
many different styles and different creativity levels, but when I
find a site I'm really enjoying then find a spelling error it blows
the entire effect. I think its crucial to proof your work, if you
have been at it all night then have someone else proof it. Its such
a waste to put in all that effort on something to have one spelling
error to really ruin it for you.
9. What general tips and or ideas would you give to new web
designers?
Apryl: See above. Really really proof
your spelling. Its important to have a full complete site without an
error. Spelling does count;) Most of all have fun with it. If you
aren't enjoying what your doing then its not worth the time or
effort. The next thing I'd have to say is keep building. My first
site was horrible. Then the next was and so was the next, but little
by little they started getting a bit better. You learn new
techniques from building all the time.
10. What is the best thing about owning/operating your own business?
Apryl: Rolling out of bed and starting
work in your PJ's. How could anyone not love that? I also love the
fact that I can take the time to be there when my children need me.
If my kids need me for something during the day from school 9 out of
10 times I can make the time to go and be with them. That is what is
nice.
Some drawbacks are seeing how dirty your house is and knowing that
if you move to clean it that your missing out on the work your
supposed to be doing. If your very anal compulsive about a clean
house its a nite mare sometimes... Its hard to block it out. Its
also hard working when the kids are screaming and concentrating...
Its also hard not to just leap up and run off and do something
because you feel you can get back to it, but then when you come back
your focus is wrong and you just don't get it done.
11. If you were starting all over today, would you do anything
differently? And if so what would that be?
Apryl: That is a very difficult
question. I'm honestly not sure. There are so many things that
change daily in our industry, that starting today would be a totally
different ballgame. If I had that time I would have taken more
direct design classes instead of learning by testing and doing. Then
again that would have lost some of the fun I had in learning to
design the way I do.
12. Any new projects in the near future you would like to share with
our readers?
Apryl: I'm always working on something.
Nothing special at this time. I have some thoughts on some larger
projects by the end of the year that include a total redesign of XXX
Design, American Catfighting and pre constructing TGP gallery pages
for direct purchase, upload and promotions.
